A Letter From Amy Fell, Editor Of
ARTaFacts™ Magazine |
Dear Educator,
I was an art teacher at the K-5 level for fourteen years in a public school
system. With classes of at least twenty-five students, I found it awkward,
ineffective and frustrating to
read and show pictures to my students about an
artist or art topics from only one book, or hold up one poster for my all
students to see. When I used slide shows, the children were more interested in
the shadows and sounds of the darkened art room around them. I began to envision
a magazine for art teachers to use in their classrooms that would be affordable,
so each student could have a copy to use during class. It would have color
photographs of artwork. It would contain basic, introductory information about
the world of art and artists. The text format would be fun, interesting and easy
to read. There would be just enough information to peak the reader's interest,
not overwhelm it. It would be available at different reading levels.
Now in its tenth year, ARTaFacts™ Magazine is used by art teachers,
classroom teachers and homeschoolers. Librarians keep it on hand as reference
material and it has been used in presentations at art education conventions. A
dentist got a subscription for his waiting room because it is so readable and
informative. A subscription gets five issues delivered over the course of a
school year. Each issue has a single topic. Three of the five issues are about
the lives of particular artists, like a master painter, a sculptor, and a woman
or ethnic artist. The text is biographical, talks about the processes they used
to create their art and points out some of the adversities they overcame on the
way to becoming successful artists. The fourth issue features art of a
particular culture, of a time in history, or a style of art, such as Egyptian.
The fifth and final issue of each year spotlights a professional who is working
in a career involving visual arts. The text has some biographical information
but is more about what is needed in the way of education and training to pursue
an art career.
Each issue has a list of museums where one can view the artwork featured in
the issue, as well as other works by the artist. Also included are four or five
color photographs of the artist's work. Age appropriate reading levels make
reading together fun and easy. Art vocabulary words encourage discussions about
the elements of art. A small world map shows where the artist was born and
places where major life events occurred. A timeline shows what was going on in
the world during the artist's lifetime. Kid friendly Websites and reference
books are listed for further research. Thought provoking questions stimulate
student interest. All this is presented in only four pages!
ARTaFacts™ Magazine is available at two reading levels. The elementary level
is suited for third through seventh grade or younger accelerated readers.
Elementary issues come with easy-to-use lesson plan ideas so kids get hands-on
experience at creating their own art in many different media. The
secondary level is identical to the elementary issue in all aspects except the
reading level, which is more suited for junior high and high school. The text is
in a smaller print size, so there is room for more information. Instead of
lesson plans, the secondary level comes with two reproducible handouts to prompt
creative writing ideas about the issue's topic and suggest ideas for students to
create their own art.
Kindly take the time to look over this online issue and be certain to tell
your colleagues about our Website. I look forward to your questions, comments
and subscriptions.
